Multichoice Nigeria to pay NGN900bn tax debt to FIRS

Multichoice Nigeria Limited (Multichoice) offers entertainment platforms such as DStv and GOtv. In April 2021, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) issued a demand notice of NGN1.8trillion to Multichoice over an alleged NGN1.8 trillion tax evasion. Next, Multichoice appealed with the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT) in Lagos over FIRS’ demand note. Before the sitting, an aggrieved taxpayer will make a statutory deposit under Paragraph 15(7) of the Fifth Schedule to the FIRS (Establishment) Act 2007.

TAT Lagos zone has, therefore, ordered Multichoice Nigeria to pay 50 percent of NGN1.8trillion tax dues to FIRS. TAT has adjourned the Appeal to 23 September 2021, subject to compliance with the order. In July 2021, FIRS ordered banks to freeze MultiChoice accounts over outstanding tax payments.
